#HeraeusPeople Story
From zero to one hundred
Dr. Martina Gieg, Group People Officer, Group Management Committee
"Empty desks, ongoing processes, and a wealth of exciting projects – that’s what awaited me at the start of my first leadership role in Rewards Strategy and Projects. The special twist? I was on my own. A one-woman show with the ambitious task of leading a Center of Competence. Sounds like an impossible mission? Not at all. Let me explain why.
From challenge to opportunity
You probably know that feeling – when your head is spinning, your to-do list is exploding, and you're asking yourself: How do I keep my head above water? But instead of being paralyzed by the pressure, I took three decisive steps: First: I set clear priorities. Second: I started recruiting the right people strategically. Third – and this was the game changer: I changed my perspective.
Yes, it was a challenge. But what an incredible opportunity! How often do you get the chance to build your own team from scratch? And then I did something that many find difficult: I raised the white flag and asked for help. Not as a sign of weakness, but with a clear message to colleagues across the entire HR team: “Shall we tackle this together?”
The response was overwhelming. In no time, the support I had asked for arrived. I could feel the tremendous positive energy and genuine team spirit.
My motivation? Still unsolved problems
And yes, this story has a happy ending: Today, I’m proud to lead an amazing team. Challenges still exist – and that’s exactly how it should be. Because challenges aren't obstacles; they’re opportunities to grow. Solving problems is more than just a task for me. It’s what drives me."
