A bold change of roles

"A step back, yet forward. After years in a management role at a global player and as portfolio team lead for the PALACOS® brand group, I decided to make a bold change of direction. Everything was going well, but I took a leap into the unknown. It was a step that involved risks, but it turned out to be a win for myself, the company, and our customers. How did this come about?
Desperately seeking a successor
My predecessor had been searching in vain for years for someone to take over the role of scientific trainer. He had left big shoes to fill. Several attempts had failed. Without much advance notice, I applied directly to his supervisor. The surprise was complete when he replied enthusiastically, "When can you start? We didn't dare ask you."
Easier said than done. This decision meant a break with my previous career. Sure, I was a biologist by training. Nevertheless, the switch back to science worried me. Could I really fill this role? But the initial feedback was overwhelmingly positive and encouraged me not only to accept the position, but to redefine it.
Successful trial run
The role itself presented a number of challenges. Field work was demanding, and not every customer welcomes new faces with open arms. A training event, our “Palacademy” in Switzerland, became a test of my abilities. Training Swiss surgical staff on microbiology and infections was an extremely high-profile task. “Now it has to work!” I thought to myself. The event was a success. Looking back, I am glad to have immersed myself in science again. I am impressed by the trust the company placed in me. I didn't just follow in my predecessor's footsteps. I left my own mark."
