HR Professional? This way!

"I never imagined I would one day work as an HR professional – let alone at the age of 30. My path? Anything but straight. I joined Heraeus not long after college with the simple goal of becoming financially independent from my parents without a long-term career plan. Starting in administration, I found that I enjoyed true connection with people and I admired those who brought positive influence and insight through their expertise – I wanted to be one of them. A clear career ambition took shape within me and Human Resources felt like the right way.

My personal journey

I was thrilled when there was an opening in HR and my manager at the time fully supported my transfer. I didn’t realize this was only the first step of all challenges ahead. However, luckily enough, the support has always been there wherever the challenges are. Having taken courses in Human Resources and always getting along with colleagues, I thought I was well prepared till the moment I found that I couldn’t speak a word in a room full of HR colleagues, all much more senior than me. I watched others share their ideas with confidence, while I stood frozen with nerves. I felt inferior and insecure. My manager Jason noticed it and cued me for a few words. I stammered out something I can no longer remember, but I will never forget how violently my heart was pounding. Afterward, Jason told me: “We have to work through this if you want to bring others your influence and insights.” And that became my turning point. Following his suggestion, I prepared a training session on “Creative Design” for HR community, he coached​ me through the rehearsals and then gave me the floor​ to deliver the session. I was excited, nervous, and proud at the same time. That moment changed everything. Not only had I shared my knowledge, but I also truly felt I was now part of the team as an equal.

It takes courage to succeed

Today, I present the Heraeus Employer Brand to rooms over 100 students and drive employer branding initiatives within Greater China HR organization. Recently, we were listed among the “100 Employer Excellence of China”. I couldn’t be prouder! Does my heart still race when I’m speaking in public? Yes. But I know it will only last for the first two to three minutes and everything will be fine. What I also know is that I’m part of a team that will always have my back.

Daring to start over at 30? Absolutely! Sometimes it just takes time to figure out which path to take. Take your time and pluck up the courage to unleash your potential once you’re determined. I now see courage not as a sudden leap, but as a muscle that strengthens with use – and at Heraeus, you’ll always find a team ready to be your training ground to achieve your career ambition."
